Gamers Don’t Game: Hooked On You

Hooked On You: A Dead By Daylight Dating Sim came out about a year ago, and the question remains; did everyone buy it just to own the LOL so random meme game, or did they actually go in and play it? The game has 4800 reviews on Steam, so it must have sold a relatively decent amount, right? Did the people really want to play a Dead By Daylight parody dating sim?

Well…

I suppose we could talk about achievement stats. And this one is easy since the game only came out on Steam. How Long To Beat says the game takes roughly 2.5 hours to beat the main story, 5 hours if you’re doing absolutely everything. So in other words it’s not a particularly long game. I’ve taken dumps longer than the main story on this game.

So it doesn’t say good things when the achievement for beating day one has a whole 69.5% completion rate. Meaning at least 30% of players either didn’t bother launching the game, or booted it up for two minutes and never came back. Meanwhile 54.7% of players completed the achievement for beating day 2, so over 20% of people who beat day one also logged off and never came back. There are three days in this game.

Interesting 49% of players beat the game at least once, not surprising given its length. 65% of people had the game open for at least an hour to get the achievement. 14.7% had it open longer than five hours. It does show that most people who beat day 2 then went on to actually beat the game.

What lesson should we learn from this? Throwaway meme games are a great opportunity to rake in easy money, as long as you’re not expecting a good portion of people who buy them to play them. Also gamers don’t game.

Until next time.
