Disney’s Illusion Island is a baby game for babies. And I don’t say that as a pejorative, it’s very clearly a game meant for children. Baby’s first Metroidvania if you will. But here at Vidjama Games we don’t tolerate low expectations for games just because they’re meant for kids. And thankfully Disney Illusion Island doesn’t disappoint.
It’s not a bad title. For kids, or for people who want a very relaxed Metroidvania game. Honestly I can see a lot of parents using this as a stepping stone to introduce their kids to the Metroid games or Castlevania. You can play in coop, and even hug each other for extra health. The gameplay loop is very similar to what you’d get in a Metroidvania; you slowly unlock parts of the massive level. Over time you obtain more powers that grant you access to more areas of the map, and ultimately the goal is to find the things and do the stuff.
Clear as mud?
You do have the option of cranking up the difficulty by lowering your max hearts. If you do lose all your hearts either way, the game throws you back like 30-45 seconds behind so you’re never losing much progress. You also don’t lose the stuff you collected so in some cases it’s just easier to get a collectible, get hit, and have the game send you back to a checkpoint.
Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy are playable and are identical to one another outside of their animations. This game is very charming to look at and I spent a little too much time appreciating Goofy’s mustard glider. It’s overall a charming game and the only downside I can see is that if you’re not a child or playing with a child it’s not going to stimulate your brain much. But again, it’s probably not for your demographic.
But the controls are tight, the graphics are charming, and the performance is great without any hitches that I noticed. Also I know what you’re thinking, and the answer is yes. You can fully play this game on a Switch SNES controller. It works flawlessly. Like God intended.
At $40, Disney Illusion Island is a good deal. Alternately if you rented it like I did you can probably beat it over a long weekend.
