The game itself is fine though.
Headbangers is my new Fall Guys, by which I mean I expect to play it for another couple of weeks before summarily getting really pissed and just shelving it for all of eternity. I’m actually enjoying it far more than Fall Guys because Fall Guys is a game about luck over skill. The luck that the game’s dog ass physics system and the tide of players will go in your favor. Don’t try to argue with me, I don’t care.
But Headbangers is definitely completely skill based, in that it’s a rhythm game all about rhythm. Just you and your button presses against other players and their button presses to see whose buttons are pressed best. Suffice to say I’m enjoying the crap out of it at the moment.
So why am I complaining about the challenges? There are a handful of outfits that can be unlocked through challenges in Headbangers, and the challenges suck. Not all of them. Not even most of them. Enough of them suck to chap my ass, although with a full battle pass worth of other crap to unlock it’s not enough to sour my experience playing the game.

For the sake of this article I’ll split the challenges into three categories; endurance, skill, and bullcrap. The endurance categories are won through sheer willpower. Complete 20 games. Complete 50 matches. Get X score total over multiple playthroughs of the same mini-game. Stuff you will eventually just get without having to be particularly good at the game. Those are fine, passive challenges.
The second category is for skill challenges. These are one-off challenges that require you to be dare I say actually good at the games. These include challenges like having less than a .550 reflex score in a mini-game, or scoring more than 18 points in a mini-game about identifying musical notes. Some of these are hard as hell. In all my time playing Ring as a mini-game, I never see more than one person per match hit the 1.7s average reaction time and often times it isn’t hit even by the top player. Which makes it all the more satisfying when you get them.

I should point out at this point that if you’re looking for accessibility options in Headbangers, your options are to eat shit and go somewhere else. As a competitive game based around sight, sound, and reflexes if you’re lacking in any of those departments you are SOL in this game.
But some of the challenges are total garbage and those I’ll refer to as the bullcrap challenges. These are challenges so hard that I’m pretty sure I’ll never get them with the sweaty ass nerds who play this game. One is being the first to pick the culprit in Guilty which is just about impossible. The second is to be the first to take an order in Yes Commander. You basically have to just spam buttons and hope for the best in those challenges. So yeah, they’re doable. But they aren’t fun.
Otherwise I have no opinion on the matter. I am having fun with this game.
