Fortnite: I Beat Chapter 5 Season 1

Got to level 200.

Chapter 5 is an interesting time to be a player on Fortnite. In addition to the new Helios map we also got big updates in the form of Fortnite Festival, Lego Fortnite, and Rocket Racers. The plot of the season was that Peely has been kidnapped and the culprits appear to be this mysterious new group called The Society. The player teams up with Agent Jones and over the course of the season infiltrates, subverts, and ultimately defeats The Society in order with Peely being rescued at the end.

This is where Fortnite’s story gets funny in a sense. Presumably the four main members of The Society (Oscar, Valeria, Nisha, and Montague) are officially dead in canon because we kill them in the final week’s mission and that’s usually how the game handles those kind of story progressions. Last season one of the final quests was to kill Kado Thorne, however as a vampire he was resurrected at the start of this season and has been just kinda sitting in the background.

Now I say Fortnite’s story is funny because Peter Griffin is also here, but he’s not really. Peter Griffin is one of the members of The Society but not really. Maybe it’s because crossover characters are only booked for that season and Epic doesn’t want to or can’t legally integrate them more into the story, but despite being a member Peter Griffin is never actually mentioned in the story mode. In fact he’s not even one of the bosses you kill as part of the final quest line even though you kill all four of the other leads.

Where does that lead us going into Season 2? Well there’s a whole plot about Pandora’s Box and apparently that being the reason The Society kidnapped Peely. There’s a bunch of characters from past seasons walking around the island still, and time travel is still a thing to be considered alongside multiple timelines. I assume Kado Thorne is still around because Epic want an easy excuse to bring back OG seasons and having us stop another time caper from an indestructible vampire is good enough.

I really hope this isn’t the end of Fortnite concerts, because I’m aware Epic hasn’t exactly been having a great time at creating them despite the fact that they bring in tens of millions of dollars in cosmetic sales.

Chapter 5 Season 1 has been an interesting testing ground for mechanics and stuff in Fortnite. The medallions were tweaked several times over the season and I expect we’ll see something similar in season 2. They were insanely powerful at the start of the season before Epic nerfed them a bit and I think they’re pretty much right where they needed to be. You know medallions were properly nerfed because I had a fair few matches where nobody actually bothered to grab them. Knowing where the other guy was coming from was a big help in me winning a couple of victory royales because I knew where he was, but he didn’t know where I was.

The train was pretty quickly abandoned in my opinion, once people realized that the loot from it wasn’t great. It’s a passive way of getting around the map but there’s so many other options. I’m hoping that Season 2 brings back normal daily missions. I wasn’t a fan of the Match Quests because it was an obvious way for Epic to pad out player time. You can’t beat all three in one match like the old days, you can only take one match quest per match which makes it even more annoying when none of the three choices are anything good.

Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 1 ends on March 8. I have no clue where the story is going after this.
