Vidjama Gmaes Work

They Just Do

I Rented This: Girl Genius: Adventures In Heterodyne Castle

It’s a comic book game.

Girl Genius is a game that has an audience but I am sure as hell not one of those people. This is one of those games that you look at and realize that it’s a good game but I have no interest in beating it.

Adventures in Heterodyne Castle is a game right out of the PlayStation 2 Jak and Daxter days, by which I mean the hitboxes are awful and the game has ridiculous convoluted puzzles. You spend your time adventuring through a dungeon with your big wrench that you use to complete puzzles and whack enemies over the head until they explode. You gain different movement-based gear as well as gadgets that get upgraded over the course of the game and are just existing to complete light puzzles.

There’s a lot of handholding in the game, by which I mean you can’t walk off of ledges. And I’m happy about the handholding, because one of the accessibility options allows you to auto-complete the lockpicking mini-game and I would have quit playing this a long time ago because that mini-game is complete dog ass and is one of the worst lockpicking puzzles I’ve ever seen in a game. Just kidding, it’s the worst.

There are too many loading screens in this game, and it makes the backtracking and movement all the worse because you are constantly in loading screens. Levels are very tiny, like you’d see in a PS2 game, and a lot of the area puzzles are incredibly convoluted in how you’re supposed to solve them. I eventually hit a point where I just got so tired of the game that I decided it was a good point to call it a day and stop playing.

And then I cam here because this isn’t worth a video. If this sounds like I didn’t like Girl Genius it’s because the more I think about it, the worse my opinion gets.

I rented Girl Genius and I still feel kinda like my money was wasted. If you’re really jonesing for a new video game in the vein of Ratchet and Clank, this might be right up your alley. There is a demo on Steam, so I highly recommend checking it out yourself. Don’t take my word for it.
