I’m torn.
Fortnite Chapter 2 remix is almost upon us and it got me thinking about some of the more long term changes that Fortnite has undergone in years. Particularly how back in Chapter 2 bosses used to be a lot harder to go up against for a myriad of reasons.
Chapter 2 Season 4 is one that comes to mind, and most of you who played this season already know who I’m going to point out. Wolverine. Wolverine spawned in one of a handful of locations and necessitated playing in groups to kill him. Hell, you needed a group to find him because he wasn’t marked on the map. Not only did you have to contend with other players trying to take down Wolverine for his weapon and simply to complete the in-game challenges, you had to actually find Wolverine himself.
And Wolverine is a tough sonofabitch. He hits hard, has a big health pool, regenerates health, and when defeated gets put into a knockdown state that if you don’t kill him he will auto-revive after seven seconds.
It’s interesting to note that for the most part enemies back then had less health and shield than the bosses do now. Doombot has 800 health and 800 shield but unlike Wolverine who killed me a small handful of times before I killed him and beat the challenge has never defeated me. The increase in health pools among bosses hasn’t held up to the tools available to players to take them down effectively, and for the most part the bosses are barely an inconvenience.
We are a long way away from bosses like Wolverine, Predator, etc.
Bosses in Chapter 2 for Fortnite were just harder in general, and the challenges back then were more difficult. Not that I’m complaining about the latter. Fortnite had a lot of challenges back in Chapter 2 that were multi-layered and you had to complete several challenges back to back in the same match otherwise you started over. Although some of the most knuckle-clenching moments in the game were times I had to gather items and then deliver them to the other side of the map without dying.
I actually think Fortnite has the right idea where it is now. Since players have no allies and more enemies around in solo, Fortnite instead now scales up boss health depending on your mode. Doom for example has 800 health and 800 shield in solo, but 1500 health and 1500 shield in squad mode. I think we are long past the idea of bosses being really tough, as well as bosses having skins tied to them. There were too many instances of Epic relenting and just giving everyone the skins and blaming “glitches” when we knew they were fed up with the complaints it was too hard.
Anyway, when’s the next concert?
