Review: Butcher’s Creek Script

Script.

Butcher’s Creek was a really fun demo, and if you finished it and thought gee I hope the whole game is this and absolutely nothing more, then you are in luck. Developed by David Szymanski, Butcher’s Creek is a movie-sized game at cheaper than movie rates. A single playthrough took me slightly less than two hours and at nine bucks I can’t be too upset about the price. I can be a little disappointed that the game has virtually no replay value given the lack of secrets, collectibles, unlockables, or achievements.

The plot of Butcher’s Creek is probably the most interesting thing about the game. You play as a dude tracking down a gang of murderers who film and distribute snuff porn in Pennsylvania because there’s not much else to do with your free time when you live in Pennsylvania. After being captured, you break out and have to fight for survival while being bare ass naked. Over the course of Butcher’s Creek you learn about the gang of killers, their motivation, and how you factor into this whole thing. Turns out your presence may not be that accidental.

Gameplay for Butcher’s Creek can best be summed up as a low key Condemned Criminal Origins without guns. The game is completely melee based with you picking up random tools like hammers and pipes to beat your enemies to death. Naturally you have a kick attack, but your bare feet means having to navigate broken glass at the risk of taking damage and alerting enemies. You can throw weapons and kick things around to do damage with.

Combat in Butcher’s Creek can be pretty frustrating. With how erratic enemy animations are it can be hard to time your blocks and attacks based on visual cues. I found the game much easier to play by simply staying out of reach until I was ready to attack. AI is borderline braindead and will just kind walk at you or occasionally walk away in the middle of a fight. They do swear a lot.

I recommend playing the demo before buying the full game because it’s essentially the full game but shorter. Every enemy you come across in Butcher’s Creek plays exactly the same. The fighting strategy from minute one until the last enemy is exactly the same in attack style and how you fight them. The weapons available are just dependent on your choice of speed over brute force.

But the game is atmospheric and I did honestly get spooked by a few surprise encounters. Like I said, play the demo and do so knowing that the gameplay does not change at all after that point.
