Diaries From Fortnite: Season 2 Week 1

We’re back in the Fortnites.

How good is the experience in Fortnite right now? One week into Chapter 6 Season 2 and I am already at level 43.

I guess we should talk about the story in Season 2, which has only gotten more convoluted. At the end of Chapter 6 Season 1, Daigo battled Shogun X and defeated him in a swordfight, causing Shogun’s essence to go back into a demon portal, blowing up the demon portal and coating the mountain in liquid gold. The new wealth of gold in turn attracted a group of criminals hoping to become rich off of it, and that’s how we ended up in Season 2.

The whole premise of the season is why I love the ridiculousness of Fortnite’s story. I am constantly asking the question, who is the villain doing this for? If we know one thing about the Fortnite islands it’s that they are incredibly easy to take control of, and subsequently lose control of. Fletcher Kane is the big bad guy of the season and he loves gold as much as he loves being shipped by all the horny wolf lovers in the Fortnite community.

And in Part 1 of the storyline the player helps Skillet and Valentina rob Fletcher Kane, and the whole season story appears to be revolving around a heist against Fletcher Kane and his banks.

Season 2 has a new mechanic; Gold Rush. By swimming in a golden river or throwing a golden chug or getting a golden shower, players get this effect. It makes you run and mine faster temporarily. I imagine this is more of a boon for competitive players than someone like myself.

My favorite weapon from Reload has come over to Season 2, and I’m talking about the Mammoth Pistol. Good golly I love this pistol. Epic is very clearly doing some experiments here in Season 2. The boons that you can pick up offer some interesting bonuses. I’m talking about getting gold rush from opening containers, having killed enemies ping on your map, getting bonus ammo when picking up gold bars. There are only two medallions this season and I don’t think they’ll be getting any OP complaints.

We did get a baseball bat that can charge up hits and send enemies flying, and Sub Zero is in this season for some reason. Probably the vague Japanese ninja clan theme tying it all together.

Looting is a lot more fun this season, I will say that. It is much more engaging to head over to the banks or jump on the train and blow the lid open on that to get your loot, then rush over to the black markets to spend your dill bits on powerful items. Obtaining gold is piss easy this season as well, I have pulled in over 20,000 gold in just a single week of playing so far.

Epic very clearly realized that players would be awash with gold but didn’t put too much thought into how they’d want to spend it. POIs with banks have a few vending machines that sell thermite and lasers that area already available in abundance because the areas are covered in go bags that specifically drop those items.

With how quickly I’m leveling up, maybe I’ll end up finishing the battle pass in a month and a half instead of two months this time.
