Fortnite: Damn You Survivor Medals

I uploaded the original photo until I remembered this theme puts the header in black and white. How do I fix that?

Fortnite is hilarious. I have a tendency to play just long enough that I start getting matched with the sweaty nerds who play literally nothing but Fortnite. And then I stop and by the next day I’m usually back in the realm of normal people whose chairs don’t smell like the person sitting in it for ten days straight without a single shower.

The last time I talked about Fortnite I was writing about the creative mode. This time I want to talk about the new bane of my life; Survivor missions. This is a gradually elevating set of challenges that simply involve getting to a certain number of people left alive with a certain number of kills.

It’s a challenge that routinely rises and falls in difficulty, since getting to the last twenty or even last ten with a few kills isn’t that difficult if you’re playing right. But the further you play in a day the more players of sweatiness you end up facing up against, and the harder the challenges actually get. I ended up playing right up until I hit the rare prized llama, won for getting to the last 12 players with two kills on the board.

The next phase has you getting to the final 20 right off the bat with 3 kills. Oy.

Story-wise there’s surprisingly a lot going on right now in Fortnite.

The most prescient is the overarching baddy of the season; Kado Thorne. Kado Thorne has access to a time machine and serves as a plot device excuse for Epic to unvault a lot of old mythic weapons from prior seasons whose characters are no longer hanging around. Thorn is a vampire and the leader of the Eclipse, an organization dedicated to uh…do something evil. Destroy the island, absorb the Zero Point, microwave his leftover salmon. Really sick shit.

Actually I’m not sure what Kado Thorne’s plan is. We got some guff last season from Optimus Prime about how bad things were about to happen, and Dr. Slone is back as a good guy under the “greater threat” change. They mention he’s robbing the island but who cares. The island seems to have just as much resources as before Kado showed up, and given it resets every 22 minutes it’ll be fine. The game has literally not explained what Kado Thorne is up to at this point and it just makes him boring.

I guess it also doesn’t help that most of Fortnite’s lore takes place outside of the loop, where the bad guys have their real power. Not inside where someone kicks the shit out of Kado Thorne in pretty much every match.

Oh yeah, Dr. Slone is fully back as an ally. It’s yet to be seen what part she’ll play. The other factions are still in weird states of limbo including The Last Reality, the aliens that Slone originally fought with us against. The Seven are nowhere to be found after the island got covered in Google Chrome, and the Zero Point seems to be in this constant state of being a really important thing yet nobody really caring about it.

When was the last time someone went after the Zero Point? Weird stuff.
