Fortnite Festival: The State Looks Down on the TV

And that’s about the time that bitch hung up on me.

It’s time to talk about the Fortnite again, but this time I want to talk about Fortnite Festival because I’ve been playing a good amount of Fortnite Festival lately. Mostly to see what I can get my high scores up to and otherwise playing rotating songs so I’m not encouraged to spend money on too many of them. But what got my goat was listening to Ride Wit Me by Nelly and realizing how weird censorship has gotten in Fortnite over the last couple of years.

And this isn’t me complaining about not having swears in songs, nor am I going to point out the very real disappearing butt cheeks in Fortnite models. I’m just making an observation. I actually like the radio edit of Ride Wit Me, maybe it’s because I listened to it a lot as a kid, but also the creative way that they play with the language.

Back when Fortnite released the Ariana Grande concert, they actually made a mistake and bleeped out “bedroom” but left in “bitch” by accident. Bitch was later censored. But I played What’s My Age Again by Blink 182 and I noticed that they used a really bad censored version that popped up over a decade ago. Here’s part of the lyrics that got my attention;

Then later on, on the drive home
I called her mom from a payphone
I said I was the cops and your husband’s in jail
This state looks down on sodomy

And that’s about the time that bitch hung up on me
Nobody likes you when you’re twenty-three
And are still more amused by prank phone calls
What the hell is call ID?
My friends say I should act my age
What’s my age again?
What’s my age again?

Okay, what do you think they censored here? Sodomy? Yeah. They splice in a line earlier in the song so Mark Hoppus sings “and then I turned on the TV” so he sings “the state looks down on the TV,” which doesn’t make any sense. And the edit is really poorly done, and probably the work of a stupid intern because they didn’t use the original recording or even bother cleaning it up. You can hear the guitar riffs from earlier in the song that just cut in and then immediately cut back out again.

Oh and going back to my Ariana Grande bit from earlier, the copy Epic Games used doesn’t censor bitch in What’s My Age Again. Now obviously these inconsistencies can be marked up to one thing; Epic Games isn’t doing the censoring. It wasn’t the case in Rock Band and it certainly won’t be the case here. The domestic violence solo at the end of Down With the Sickness is laughably terrible with the censorship (although it’s laughably awful without it) and Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance censors bitch as well.

Still a ton of fun songs on Fortnite Festival.
